1、To draw up administrative regulations and rules in surveying and mapping, formulate development plans for the surveying and mapping undertaking, and management policies and technical standards for the surveying and mapping profession, and supervise their implementation. To organize and manage basic surveying and mapping, international and administrative boundary surveying and mapping, cadastral surveying and mapping, and other national level or key surveying and mapping projects and key scientific and technological projects in surveying and mapping.

2、To draw up administrative measures for examination and approval of qualifications of surveying and mapping organizations, examine and approve the first level qualifications of surveying and mapping organizations, manage the registration of surveying and mapping activities, examine and approve the external supply of surveying and mapping results, and surveying and mapping activities conducted in China by foreign organizations or individuals, investigate and deal with national-level or serious law-breaking cases in surveying and mapping, and take charge of the review of related administrative decisions.

3、To manage national fundamental geographic information and data, organize and direct fundamental geographic information services; to manage national surveying and mapping datum and control systems; to compile standard sample maps defining the international boundaries of the People’s Republic of China in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; to examine and release important geographic information and data upon authorization; to direct and supervise the management of surveying and mapping results and the protection of surveying markers nationwide.

4、To formulate plans and technical standards for cadastral surveying and mapping, administer the examination and approval of cadastral surveying and mapping qualifications, and validate cadastral surveying and mapping results.

5、To administer map compilation, examine maps to be published or presented to the public, and supervise representation of geographic names on maps.

6、To supervise and manage national surveying and mapping budget and other earmarked funds.

7、To organize international cooperation and exchanges.
